Brighton-(UK) based soul band Normanton Street release their latest single ahead of what promises to be an active, second half of the year for the acclaimed trio. Speaking on the new release, front woman Phoebe Freya explains the inspiration for the lyrics for ‘All That I Have’ as: “I was pregnant, and aware that this was such a precious time when it was just me and her. When she was born she was in the world she wasn’t just mine anymore, she would become her own person. I wanted to write a song for her”.
Nicholson Bukola Davids and Ndifreke Archibong aka Feleke we’re both born in Nigeria. Feleke is from Akwa Ibom State and Nicholson was born in Lagos. They own QM Records who are champions of the creative scene in Brighton UK and are looking to be more active in Nigeria in years to come.
Raised in Bradford, Ndifreke (guitar) & Nicholson (bass) moved to Brighton and formed the band Normanton Street, as well as their own independent label QM Records in 2013. Since then they have released several EP’s on the label as Normanton Street and also worked with many of the up and coming soul, jazz and hip-hop artists in Brighton’s budding music scene. Being a black owned business in this current time, co-label owner Ndifreke encourages others to follow what he and Nicholson have achieved so far in light of the recent Black Lives Matter protests stating: “It’s positive to see so many people take a stance to show their disapproval to racism in all forms. It would be great to see more black owned businesses formed and celebrated in the music industry as a direct result of this.”
The hometown heroes speaking on this collaboration stated; “We were invited to collaborate with Bradford Youth Orchestra for a one-off performance for Bradford Festival in 2018. We were struck by how good the young guys were, they learnt their parts in one session. We were so impressed that the year after we got back together with The Orchestra to record some of our new songs. ‘All That I Have’ is the first of many to come”.
After a short break from music in 2019, Normanton Street are putting their foot on the gas to close out 2020 with ‘All That I Have’ being the first of many collaborative tracks with the Bradford Youth Orchestra for their upcoming EP (date TBA).
